Julia Hetta’s style is immediately recognizable, you can’t help but notice the nod to Rembrandt in her beautiful, renaissance-style portraits – the frail light falling on her subjects seems to be the same that touched on Van Eyck or Vermeer’s canvases. Clarity and perfectionism have fast become Hetta’s signature style
Julia Hetta’s photographs provide a glimpse of an alternative world, rich with the romance and quietude associated with classical painting. Working almost exclusively with natural light and long exposure times, Hetta imbues her subjects with a sense of serenity and power. Her use of light, color and texture transforms her fashion photographs into compositions of timeless enchantment.
“My work reflects myself and I always try to be close to my own inner language and aesthetic. I am a very romantic person”, reflects Julia. Speaking of her technique she said, “It’s basically very simple, but as we know simplicity can sometimes be the most difficult. I’m very focused on the lighting but always driven by art that is beautiful yet complicated, dark and mysterious.”
Hetta is a graduate of the renowned Gerrit Rietveldt Art Academy in Amsterdam. Her editorial clients include AnOther, Double, Acne Paper and T Magazine and her clients include Lanvin, Jil Sander, Hermès and Chloe. In 2014, Hetta’s work was featured in the FOAM exhibition, Don’t Stop Now: Fashion Photography Next, showcasing the most exciting next-generation photographers working in fashion today.
